Abortion & India
61Abortion is very tricky and complex topic. Opinions are always divided on abortion depending on influence of religion , society , morality. When so ever a woman undergoes an abortion , questions about whether what she did was right or wrong would always be raised.
For some abortion is as good as murder , for some its questioning god's will , for some its situation. India is land of billion people where around 7,00,000 abortions occur every year and 20,000 woman die in abortion related cases (mostly cases of illegal abortion).
In India abortion is legal under certain circumstances . The circumstances include threat to mental or physical health of the mother , risk of child being born with serious physical or mental abnormalities.
In cases of rape , women is entitled to have choice of aborting the child or continuing with her pregnancy. If giving birth to the child would cause her distress effecting her mental health and hindering in way of upbringing the child , she can abort.
Under the act which legalizes abortion , the abortion has to be done in government approved hospitals and by registered medical practitioners only.
While laws lay strict guidelines for the circumstances , illegal abortions do take place across India because of variety of reasons.
The number reason for illegal abortions in India is social evil. Birth of female child is still considered to be bad in many communities in India. India has dubious statistic of killing 2 million girl child in span of 20 years!!!!!!!!.
These evil fails to get eradicated even in emerging India and this social evil might require massive campaigning to be nailed. Thousands of years of programming , dowry system and lack of women empowerment are criteria which contribute to abortions of female fetus.
Officially determination of gender of fetus is illegal in India. This was done to counter killing of girl child in the womb but time and again cases of gender determination comes to light in India.
Another type of abortions which do occur in large numbers are also due to social pressure. In India pre martial sex is social taboo and child resulting from it is not socially acceptable and for sake of saving their face often unmarried mother opts for abortions.
Sexual awareness is though, decreasing these numbers but still India has long way to go as far as reducing these numbers is concerned.
My personal opinion about people who enter pre martial sex and go for abortion if that at first place they should not have entered into a situation and if they did , they should have had courage to take responsibility for their act.
For other types of abortions , aborting for sake of getting rid of girl child is wrong under any circumstances . No matter whether one judges it from moral , social or religious point of view , there cannot be any justification for such act.
While as far as physical /mental threat to woman or risk of child being born with serious physical/mental abnormalities , that is debatable .

You have elaborated a very complex issue in a nice way, lovely reading hub!
Far too often, the innocent baby pays for the mistake of its parents. Its just not right any way you look at it.
If someone has to die, why not kill the mother or the father? They are the ones who made the choices. Why kill an innocent baby who made no choice at all?
- Of course I don't support killing anyone - but the thought makes a point.
Great Hub.

Very interesting. It's always a touchy subject but I am interested in other cultures and their ways. Thanks for writing this. I didn't write one on abortion but just on how parents need to speak to their teens in particular here in America so it's interesting to hear how other countries view certain topics. Thanks again!
