America is land of opportunities and for many in India , its ticket of better life.

Living in America is considered to be settled life and many pay lakhs to enter the dream land.Whether one works in corporate or drives a cab , if he/she is in America , he is settled. That's the norm and perception in India.

Needless to say India has highest numbers of foreign students in USA and it would continue to grow. Indians have among highest per capita income as immigrant community in USA which adds to the perception that USA guarantees good life as far as economics is concerned.

There are four different type of people in India with American dream

1) Grass Is Greener On Other Side Category :

These group of people like everything which is American and dislike everything which is Indian. These kind would criticize India at every possible opportunity. Once they go to USA and come on vacation to India , their dislike for India increase thousand folds . They hate everything from traffic sense , to attitude of people to even elevators!!!!!!!!.

For these group ,The country where they lived for first 20-30 years of their life suddenly becomes highly mis manged , dirty country with full of irresponsible people doing nothing in their life .

2) Dislike American Culture But Like Its Money Category :

These group go to USA but still don't like it. They would ridicule American culture , praise Indian culture but would remain in America for rest of their life.

First opportunity they would criticize American way of living but continue to live there. They like money which America gives.Ironically these group after staying for 10-20 years in America become far more conservative as compared to their relatives living in India. Their zeal to maintain their culture remaining in usa makes them more conservative.

When these people would come for vacation , they would speak about how much they dislike american way of living , how they protect their children from getting corrupted , how they preserve Indian values . After tons of critisim , they would go back to america to earn dollars.

3) Rationalist :

These group are rational people who view America and India as nations with great qualities as well as limitations. These people are neither all praise for any country nor all for criticism .

4) All's Bad Category :

The fourth category dislike India and America , both. They would study in good American university but wont like American education system. They would criticize Indian education system too which gave them platform for higher studies in America.

These people dislike Indian and American way of governance and are left oriented. They would talk about revolution and would give 100 reasons of why India cannot become global player and why USA would fall..

Irrespective of which category these people belong , they would do everything possible to realize their American dream.

Hi!

Enjoyed yr article. But I feel you have left one important category. There are lots of Indians who may be living in USA and going often to India or living in India but visiting USA often (I belong to this second category and consider USA as practically second home country for me) and who like both countries. They are different from what you categorize as rationalists, who are more like matter of fact with no heart feeling. It is quite possible to love ideas, styles, problems, assets or limitations of both countries. I think more and more people who have to deal with both these countries now belong to this category.
