Being Lesbian In India
65When Indian court ruled that gay and lesbian sex with consent must not be considered to be criminal offense , India saw a rare scene of unity . Unity in diversity is India's daily life but for a change , India saw the religious head of all major religion coming together on same podium opposing court verdict and made their intentions clear that they would appeal against the verdict.
Being gay or lesbian is never easy in any country and being gay/lesbian is country with human civilization of more than 5000 years is always difficult.
I remember while in college people used to tease a boy who never discussed girls and often was more concerned with salman , hrithik's body. Aadmi duje kisam ka was nickname given to him .
Year back a story was published in news daily in which two lesbian women married and police intervened (lesbian marriage is not legal in India) and separated both. One of the girls was forced to marry a man by her family.
Honey moon travels pvt ltd (movie) covered this issue in which a gay marries a Indian woman because of family pressure.
When one is inclined towards something which is not according to inclination of majority of people , discrimination (intended or unintended) becomes a harsh reality.
Baba ramdev ,famous yoga guru considers being gay to be mental problem . But according to psychology gay, lesbian is not mental disease.
I had received an anonymous comment on my blog when I invited lesbians and gays to write about their life during court verdict issue.
I received only two comments on which one was of a lesbian who had to leave her family and not stays in bhopal with her girl partner. Both are now 29 , not welcomed by their families and living life under single roof. Initially both were pressurized by their families to get into hetero marriage but when they refused to budge , their families gave up the hope and now things are pretty strained between them and their respective families.
Things are ok ,right now since pressures have died down but being two women staying in bhopal is not going to be easy for them.
Being lesbian and gay , doesnot come naturally to most of us but at same time people do have right to live according to their preferences and why should we interfere in that?
Many critics of gay and lesbian often state that in these way families would be broken. Now how is that possible?. Does making gay legal would make me gay? or continuing with gay being illegal , would that make a gay into non gay?
Let people live as per their preference .

Great Hub , welcome to HubPages :) Everyone has the right to live according to their choices . People again need to practice tolerance .
What a great hub this is. You are very informative. I am half-Indian, (British and also half-Thai) and I know what being pressured into a hetero marriage is like, and I refused to do it. The pressure on women living in India is awful, and they are perhaps better leaving. Maybe if there was an official announcement that gay women should quite India for life in the west for sexual asylum reasons, then it might shock the Govt into allowing women to marry like they can do in other countries.

That is right! Peoples personal sexual preferences should be their business, and their choice! It helps to remember that when people are offensive and unkind towards others, they are refeering to an aspect of themselves -insecurity. One will not know ultimate freedom, love and peace, until they are free of calling judgment.
