Famous Writers Of India

India is ancient countries and many great authors have been born in India since thousands of years. Authors who wrote fiction as well as non fiction.

Epics like mahabharata , ramayan still inspire millions. Kalidas's shakuntala is one of best works while tagore's gitanjali , Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's devdas are immortal. Many authors and writers in sanskrit , tamil , urdu , hinid , gujarati have given timeless classics .

Here we are talking about famous authors and writers of India who have primarily written in English.

Here is list of some of the writers in ever growing list :

1) Kiran Desai :

Daughter of noted author Anita desai , kiran desai is famous for her novel 'The Inheritance of Loss '. The novel won 2006 Man Booker Prize and National Book Critics Award in fiction. Her first novel Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard had won Betty Trask Award.

2) Arundhati Roy :

She is more famous for her stand on naxals than her novel in India. India has second highest english speaking people in the world (in numbers) but still there are more than 77% people who dont speak english .

Arundhati roy has written many books out of which her novel 'The God Of Small Things' won 1997 booker's prize.

3) Vikram Seth :

Vikram seth is another well known author and writer. The Golden Gate , A Suitable Boy are some of his famous works. Gay activist vikram seth is bisexual and his works covers this controversial issue.

4) Ramachandra Guha :

Noted writer ramachandra guha's work have included social , environmental , political , cricket. Considered expert in Indian History , his one of famous book is India after Gandhi.

5) Romila Thapar :

Indian Historian who has authored number of books on Indian History. She had declined to accept Padma Bhushan , second highest civilian award in India.

6) R. K. Narayan :

One of my favorite writes , r.k.narayan was an iconic author in India. He created fictional town called malgudi in his works.

Doordarshan later had t.v. serial based on it known as 'malgudi days' . It has been one of best serials till date and the title music is still popular after years.

His another class work called 'Guide' was adapted by dev anand and made into movie. The movie is arguably best work of dev anand.

7) Khushwant Singh :

One of most famous writers of India , Khushwant Singh is known for his sense of humor. His one of outstanding works has been 'Train To Pakistan' . Based on India-Pakistan partition , the sensitive issue is dealt very nicely by khuswant singh. The tragic incident which saw lakhs of death and lakhs of people loosing their homes.

He has written his autobiography with title 'Truth, Love and a Little Malice'.

8) Salman Rushdie :

Most famous of them all is salman rushdie. More famous for fatwa against him which still stands. The fatwa which was issued by Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini for his novel called 'Satanic Verses' .

The writer won booker's prize in 1981 for his novel 'Midnight Children' based on India's independence from Britain which had occurred in mid night.

But his fourth novel 'satanic verses' made him controversial name in Muslim world. He has not been harmed till date but there are more than 35 people who have been killed because of their association with the novel .
