Since its inception bollywood has come a long way. Initally acting in movies was not considered to be good thing. Industry had difficult time to get people on board. While today lakhs have dream to become stars like madhuri , kajol , akshay or shahrukh.

I remember a documentary on ashok kumar. Ashok kumar was educated person who got role in a movie. When he went back home , he was ridiculed by people of wasting his life by acting in movies!!!!!!!. He didnt go back but director somehow managed to get him back. Such was how people viewed those who acted in movie.

In today's era , things have changed. Those who work in ads even become a star. Television stars , reality shows and even RJs are now celebrities in their own right.

their acting talent. These timeless beauties have been part of Indian psychic since years.The list in not any type of ranking but list include heroines which made bollywood what it is today.

1) Nargis :

Who is better to start the list than nargis. The original superstar of bollywood gave many hits and her chemistry with raj kapoor did set boxoffice on fire. Nargis was brilliant in her performance and strong woman in her real life. The pillar of strength for her husband who went on to become one of best social workers of the country.

Her movies like awaara , andaz , shree 420 , barsaat made her household name and established her as one of most successful actress of her times. But her best was yet to come. This made sharmila being listed in top ten hottest actresses of all times by prestigious magazine and set way for many actress to wear bikini in 70s.

5) Asha Parekh :

Asha parekh was one of prominent actress of her time. Good actress , wonderful dancer asha went on to give most hits during her era. She won filmfare award for her movie kati patang.

6) Vyjayanthimala :

One of best dancer and finest actress vyjayanthimala was one most seeked after actress during her times.She played chandramukhi in devdas opposite dilip kumar , she won filmfare award for her roles in naya daur ,madhumati and sangam. She has been awarded padma shri by government of India.

7) Hema Malini :

The original dream girl of bollywood , hema malini is great actress , great classical dancer and was member of upper house of parliament till 2009.

8) Zeenat Aman :

Original sex symbol of Indian film Industry , zeenat aman is one of hottest heroines India has ever seen. She has one of most successful actresses of her era. Her notable films include hare rama hare krishna , roti kapada aur makaan , Satyam Shivam Sundaram,Insaaf Ka Tarazu.

9) Sridevi :

Super star sridevi worked in many hindi movies in her bollywood career with started as small role in movie julie. Sridevi went on to become biggest star of her era.

10) Madhuri Dixit :

Fine actress , amazing dancer , million dollar smile , thats what makes this dhak dhak girl. Madhuri dixit came into limelight by her famous kissing scene with vinod khanna in Dayavan. Super star kajol who captured the imagination of India by her role of simran in dil waale dulhaniya le jaayenge. Classic actress nutan was born to sobhana samarth , who herself was acclaimed actress. Nutan went on to become hugely successful actress. Her notable movies include seema , sujata,bandini,milan ,Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki.

She also acted as mother in many successful roles in early 80s. Some of her motherly roles include successful movies like meri jung , karma.

13) Smita Patil :

31 is not age to die but smita patil died at 31 because of complications in her pregnancy. Even when she died at such a young age , she remains one of tallest actress of India cinema.

She along with naseer , om puri , shabana is credited to re ignite art cinema. Her notable roles include Manthan, Bhumika,Aakrosh , Chakra . Her out and out commerical movie include namak halal opposite amitabh bachchan.

14) shabana Azmi :

One of most talented actress shabana azmi has special place in Indian film industry. She had worked in art movie as well as commercial movies.Most of her roles have been backed with strong scripts .

Her notable roles include ankur , Arth,Khandhar, Paar,godmother. All these movies earned her national awards.

15) Aishwarya Rai :

How can any list be complete without the most famous face of bollywood globally. Ash entered acting field after becoming miss world. Some of her notable roles include movies like hum dil de chuke sanam , dev das, dhoom 2 , guru , khakhi.

Her upcoming movie ravana is one of most awaited movies of 2010.
