It is good to live in city which has long history and ahmedabad is one of such places.Currently known as ahmedabad was founded by Ahmed Shah in 1411 but archaeological evidence show that area was inhabited since 11th century and was known as ashaval which was renamed as karnavati and in turn to ahmedabad.
Ahmedabad is most happening place on the earth at time of kite flying festival and navratri festival. 14th and 15th of January comes kite flying festival where colors of sky changes from blue to red, blue, violet, green, orange . Where kites fly all day and ahmedabad is on terrace. Where music flows in air and bird watching becomes city phenomena!!!!!!!!!. Kite flying
is my favorite festival . The feel of flying kite high up in the sky is awesome and one must fly kite to know what I am talking about. Another big festival which ahmedabad celebrates in huge way in navratri. Nav mean nine and ratri means night. Navratri is festival dedicated to goddess and is festival of dance. Men/Women from all walks of life , all age group dressed in traditional assemble in various places to dance . Dance type is known as garba and raas. Many like me who can't dance make sure that people dancing have audience. The dance continues for entire night.
So if you are planning to visit ahmedabad make sure your visit falls in either of these two festivals. Ahmedabad is worth seeing during these two festivals. The warmth , the festivity , the excitement is at peak during these two festivals.
Talking about ahmedabad ,how can ahmedabad's visit get completed without gandhi ashram's visit. Mahatma gandhi and ahmedabad have immortal relationship. Gandhi ashram is where gandhiji stayed and conducted his dandi march against taxes on Indian salt. The dandi march which gandhiji took along with 72 companions triggered mass movement which saw 60,000 people being jailed.
I would like to share my experience of visit to Gandhi ashram. It was accidental visit. Gandhi ashram was always a place which I wanted to visit but never did unfortunately. One day I happened to have got lost and was not finding my way. I stopped my vehicle and asked a shop owner about one road, to which he replied 'Go straight from Gandhi ashram'. My immediate question was 'where is Gandhi ashram?' .I don't remember whether the shop owner was shocked or surprised.I was too excited to go to ashram.I took my way to Gandhi ashram, parked my vehicle and went inside. It was awesome experience. The feeling of visiting a place where mahatma himself lived , walked and work was enough for me to loose track of time. I saw his footwear , his charkha , his letters. There were various quotes written about mahatma by others. One that was best according to me came from non other than Einstein .
Einstein on Gandhi -“Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.”
Very moving , impact ful and deep words. Mahatma , the man who inspired millions and led a path for generations to follow. Gandhi ashram is one of best places to visit in the world and it is not surprising that around 0.7 million people visit Gandhi ashram every year.
Another place to visit in ahmedabad is Calico Museum of Textiles. Founded by calico mills gautam sarabhai , it has textile fabric displayed which were used by mughals and other rulers from 15th century to 19th century.
If you are fascinated with history and literature Hazrat Pir Mohammad Shah Library is ideal place to visit. It is one of oldest library in India and is home to original manuscripts in arabic, turkish, sindhi and persian language.
Another wonderful place to visit is Adalaj step-well. Though not in ahmedabad ,it is not far away from ahmedabad either. It is multi storey step well with one of finest piece of architecture.
Another architectural gem is Sidi Sayiad Mosque. Entirely arched mosque with ten screen windows (jalis) on the side and rear arches. Beautifully built the mosque is one of major tourist attractions.
Other than above other famous places of ahmedabad include :
1) All 12 darwajahas
2) Ahmedabad ni gufa
3) Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial (Moti Shahi Mahal)
4) Bhadra Kali Mandir
5) Law garden eatery
6) Kankaria and Vastrapur Lake
7) Ahmedabad Cantonment which has famous hanuman temple
8) Ateria
9) IIM
Hope you enjoy your trip to ahmedabad.
