Very Sad Story
63Ahmedabad was rocked by a massive earthquake in 2001. Earthquake whose epicenter was kms away in kutchh but ahmedabad too saw few buidlings destroyed by this earthquake.
I unfortunately lived in one of those buildings which got destroyed in the earth quake. 40 people died in this building.
We had very good relationship with my neighbors who lived opposite to my apartment. A young couple (dhaval and his wife priya )with daughter (khyati) of 1.5 years. Very loving and happy family of three.
The lady and her daughter used to spend lot of time in our house. One night before the fatal day , kyati (the child) was in our house till late night. She was sleeping while her parents had gone out for a party.
They came back aroung 1 am that day. In morning while I was sleeping , I was woken up by my mother and I felt that entire earth was shaking.
Dhaval was ready for his office and was waiting for lift to arrive when earthquake happened. Within a minute his world got shattered . In front of his own eyes he saw his flat going down ,taking his wife and daughter along.
We were fortunate that our part of building didn't collapse. The building had got split into two halves , the other half went down.
We waited for 2 and half hours to get down by help of ropes. Dhaval was shocked, griefing , crying and we were consoling him. We still hoped that khyati and priya would be saved.
Falling from 7th floor made it next to impossible to survive and finally when we came down , the inevitable sad news was conveyed to us. Both mother and child were feared death but their bodies were still to be recovered.
Three days later body was recovered . Dhaval had lost all the zeal of living. He used to come daily to destroyed building and stand in front of it , spending hours just watching it.
These he continued for another two months. The loss was sudden , massive and it made void in his life which was difficult to get filled.
He to escape from his grief became alcoholic. One day under influence of alcohol , dhaval along with his friends went to highway for dinner. He met with accident there and died while being taken to hospital.
A sad end to happy family . Their photos do hang on wall of my house. We still miss them and pray to god that their souls rest in peace.

Hi, you are so right, this is a very sad story. I can tell you still think of them warmly and lovingly. So sorry this occurred and so sorry the father and husband suffered so much before his own tragic death. Thank you for sharing this experience.
