World's Five Most Unstable Countries

Global Peace Index (GPI) report was released yesterday . It has list of 149 countries and rates on basis of various criteria juding peacefulness in the country.

While newzealand , Iceland, japan are top most countries as far as being peaceful is concerned in the index , USA comes 85th in the list , five ranks behind china while India has slipped to 128th position in list of 149.

Here is the list of top five most unstable countries as per GPI-2010.

1) Iraq :

Iraq comes last in the list of peaceful countries. It has been fourth consecutive times that Iraq has been ranked bottom. War torn Iraq has had many terror attacks , ethnic violence , high crime rates since USA's invasion of Iraq in 2003.Officially more than 90,000 have died in last seven years. Though these figures are said to be low than actual figures. Out of 90,000 , 37% have been killed due to USA's invasion while another us led forces , 36% have died due to criminal violence!!!!. Iraq currently had democratic government and recently elections were held in the country. New Parliament would begin its first session on june 14th.

2) Somalia :

Somalia pirates have become nuisance for the world. A poor country has been effected by civil war , weak government , Islamic extremism. It ranks 148th in the list.

3) Afghanistan :

Peace is what has been mostly missing for this country since last 30 years. Once it was invaded by ussr , it became proxy for game between two superpowers. Whose who of world of terror , like bin laden , mullah omar , haqqini , are by product of this game between usa and ussr. This land locked country doesnot seemed to be moving towards brighter future any time soon.

Taliban still has capabilities to return while NATO and world community are trying their best to have stable Afghanistan. USA  is planning to withdraw by july 2011 , countries like India , Pakistan , china and Russia are watching closely.

Return of Taliban would be biggest blow to central asia and subcontinent region. Taliban does not have ambition of expansion but return of Taliban would be victory of extremist and al qaeda would get boost.

NATO has target of having 1,34,000 trained forces of local afghans who in turn will ensure the safety of country and make sure that peace prevails , skeptics believe Taliban is tough force to fight and trained afghans might not be good enough for them.

Corrupted democratic government is not doing much good to people of Afghanistan and allied forces either.

4) Sudan :

Largest country in africa comes 146 th in the global peace index-2010. Darfur Conflict has killed more than 19,000 people as per sudan government while many international agencies put number quiet high .It ranges from 1 lakh to 4.5 lakhs!!!!

5) Pakistan :

Pakistan is nuclear equipped country which is playing important role in Afghanistan. Pakistan's democracy has time and again being hindered by military take overs. Last military dictator was pervez. Good news for pakistan is that now it has democratic government and more importantly assertive judiciary. Pakistan is fighting its own war with Pakistan Taliban. In one year pakistan has made progress in its war against Taliban. It has neutralized swat and has had success in south waziristan. It is expected to then begin fight in north waziristan . Its main challenge would come in south punjab . Another challenge Pakistan faces in extremism. Attacks on ahamadis recently was reminder that lot of work is needed to be done.

A very informative hub. International politics is of great interest to me. Knowing the status of some the countries most often in the news is information I can use. Thanks much.

Good info. Who creates this index and where can I find the criteria?

Your title caught my eye, and I immediately went to see the list. What a relief to see my dear South Africa was not mentioned, as we had such a lot of things being said about us before the Fifa. But as John B Badd is asking, where do we find the criteria, as I am still curious to know where we stand in our journey to peace.

@John B Badd ,@equealla The Global Peace Index (GPI) is an attempt to measure the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. It is the product of Institute for Economics and Peace and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks with data collected and analysed by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Thank you for the link. I checked it out. Too much info, so I printed it for careful study. Scary part for me is S.A. is getting worse. I read about the violence in Mexico with the drug gangs etc the other day. I said to my kids, we cannot complain that much, because other people suffer more than us. But now I see they are more peaceful than us. Now the question: do humans increase their tolerance for wrong in such a manner as to adapt to unsavoury conditions without realising they are doing it.

The indexers do , however point out that all criteria and indicators has not been considered and some "blind spots" were overlooked.

I agree with the brainparent of this index, Steve Killelea, the index is a wake up call, even if not perfected.

Thanks for sharing it.

We Pakistani's know that Pakistan is not stable lately, but still hearing from others and especially in survey reports is much more difficult to endure.

Hope there is peace and stability in every nook and corner of the world.

well i believe it is a phase in Pakistan..your judiciary is strong , your people are talented lot with can do attitude..administrative system is corrupted like most subcontinent systems but press is active and strong..so in another five years , things would come out positively for Pakistan..

The constitution of 1973 must be our constitution and we should also make the mind that there are some faults in our constitution and we will change it according to the present needs. Amendments made by corrupt politician in their interest must be abrogated. We should take guidance from Holy Quran to amend the constitution. There should be no immunity for President or Prime minister in the constitution

Informative hub. Again I dont agree with the ranking. There are a lot more unstable countries then Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. These three are relatively more stable because there is some western presence and security.

Ivory coast, Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya, Philistine, Isrial, Syria, Yemen are a few to name should have been in the list before Iraq or Pakistan which are relatively more stable countries.

Pakistan's GDP for last year was 3-4% compared to 0.1% that of UK and it has a strong Judicial system like you mentioned.
